1) What is the CLU Institute?

The CLU Institute is the organization that is responsible for the administration and the promotion of the CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) designation. The Institute administers the code of professional conduct to which all Advocis members must adhere. The Institute sets the standards of practice expected of CLU designates when engaged by clients on matters involving life and health insurance and estate planning.

2) Are CLUs required to retain membership in both associations?

Yes. As a membership organization, Advocis provides many services (FORUM magazine, President’s Post, discounts on professional development and continuing education programs, the national conference, etc. The CLU Institute provides additional services for CLU designates.

3) What specific services do CLUs receive from the Institute?

The Institute safeguards the integrity of the designation. It does this by keeping the educational content of the curriculum relevant. It also ensures that only those authorized to use the designation do so.

When the Institute promotes the designation, it accomplishes two things. First, the public and other advisors are made aware of the designation and the niche in the financial services industry that it occupies. Secondly, such promotion adds to the value of the designation and the appeal that it has generally.
